Alex Bowman to Miss NASCAR Race in Phoenix Due to Vertigo

Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman will not participate in this Sunday’s NASCAR race at Phoenix Raceway due to a diagnosis of vertigo. Bowman felt unwell and was unable to continue competing last Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas. He was replaced mid-race by Myatt Snider. Anthony Alfredo will take the wheel of Bowman’s No. 48 Chevrolet this weekend in Phoenix. Alfredo has 210 starts in NASCAR national series, including 43 in the Cup Series. In addition, he is the simulator test driver for Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet. Bowman began experiencing symptoms on Sunday in Texas and abandoned the car on lap 71. The 32-year-old driver underwent two days of medical evaluations this week and drove laps on Thursday in a street car at the Ten Tenths Motor Club circuit in Concord, North Carolina, before being ruled out for the competition.

Alex has worked very hard in the last few days. We are encouraged by the progress he is making, but we have to prioritize his health above all else. Obviously, it’s frustrating for him because he is a competitor and wants to be in the race car, especially at his home track. We will continue to support Alex and look forward to his return as soon as he is medically cleared.

Jeff Andrews, president of Hendrick Motorsports
Bowman is in a contract year with Hendrick, who will request a medical waiver so that he remains eligible for the NASCAR Cup Series championship. Bowman has eight career wins in 364 Cup Series starts. He has been driving for Hendrick full-time since the 2018 season and made the playoffs in all but one season. In 2022, he missed five races due to a concussion and three races the following season due to a back fracture. Bowman achieved his best result in the Cup standings, a sixth place, in 2020.
