Valentina Shevchenko Reaffirms Her Dominance in the UFC

Valentina Shevchenko, the number one pound-for-pound in the women’s category, once again demonstrated her supremacy in the world of MMA. The flyweight champion defended her title with a unanimous decision victory over Zhang Weili in the co-main event of UFC 322 held at Madison Square Garden.

Shevchenko, with this victory, ties Amanda Nunes at the top of women’s UFC history, with 11 wins in championship fights. The fight, billed as one of the most anticipated in the history of women’s MMA, saw Zhang, former strawweight champion, move up a weight class to challenge Shevchenko. The fight was dominated by Shevchenko, who prevailed in each round according to the judges’ scorecards.

This is the art of martial arts. When there is an opponent who is very tough in their category against all others, but when they are here, in front of me, they can’t do anything.

At 37 years old, Shevchenko displayed a clear superiority in all aspects of the fight, especially in grappling. She took Zhang down repeatedly, controlling her on the ground and neutralizing her offense. The champion managed the distance and timed her takedowns to perfection. Shevchenko’s strategy was based on ground control, although he was also successful with kicks to the legs and body.

I was prepared for the most difficult challenge. I knew I couldn’t trade blows with Weili; she has incredible striking power. That’s why I worked very hard and intelligently to use distance and wrestling.

According to UFC statistics, Shevchenko outstruck Zhang in total strikes (137-80) and completed 5 of her 6 takedown attempts. The champion only needed one takedown per round, as Zhang was unable to get back to her feet. Shevchenko accumulated 13:24 of control time, repeatedly seeking the crucifix position. Shevchenko’s future is promising. Her next rival could be the Brazilian Natalia Silva, who is coming off a dominant victory over Alexa Grasso. Erin Blanchfield, after submitting Tracy Cortez at UFC 322, also presents a strong resume. One of the most interesting options is the bantamweight champion, Kayla Harrison, who will defend her title against Nunes in early 2026. If Harrison wins, she has already expressed her interest in facing Shevchenko. Shevchenko has already competed at bantamweight and challenged Nunes for the 135-pound title in 2016. Meanwhile, Zhang vowed to come back strong, but did not indicate whether she will stay at 125 pounds or return to 115.
