Gillian Robertson is getting closer to the UFC strawweight title fight

The UFC’s strawweight division is constantly changing, and Gillian Robertson took a significant step towards title contention on Saturday by defeating Amanda Lemos by unanimous decision at the UFC Fight Night held in Las Vegas. Robertson, currently ranked number 7 in the strawweight rankings, demonstrated his superiority in grappling, controlling Lemos, ranked number 6, for most of the fight. Lemos, who competed at a high level, including a title fight against Zhang Weili in 2023, couldn’t counter Robertson’s strategy.

“That’s five wins in a row,” Robertson said. “I have the most finishes of any woman [10], the most submissions of any woman [7]. The only thing I need is that belt to solidify myself.”

Despite a promising start by Lemos, who kept his distance with jabs and low kicks, Robertson achieved a takedown that changed the course of the fight. Robertson dominated the fight, securing ground control for long periods in the last two rounds. Although he didn’t manage to inflict significant damage or secure a submission, his control was enough to convince the judges. The three judges scored the fight 29-28 in favor of Robertson. On the horizon, six of the top ten strawweight fighters will be in action in the next month. In addition to the Robertson vs. Lemos fight, Virna Jandiroba will face Tabatha Ricci on April 4, and Tatiana Suarez will fight Loopy Godínez a week later. The fight between Robertson and Lemos was originally scheduled for December, but it was canceled due to a medical issue for Lemos. The main event of the fight card was a featherweight bout between Josh Emmett and Kevin Vallejos, where Vallejos achieved a notable victory. In other results, Eryk Anders defeated Brad Tavares, and announced his retirement after the fight.
