UFC lightweight Paddy Pimblett has revealed that his next opponent will “probably” be Justin Gaethje, although he is also considering facing Ilia Topuria later this year.
Pimblett (23-3) comes off a highlight-reel win over Michael Chandler in April. The 30-year-old fighter secured an impressive TKO victory in the third round of UFC 314, earning him a Performance of the Night bonus and positioning him at sixth in the lightweight rankings.
This victory was a milestone for the English fighter, who not only silenced his critics, but also put himself in contention for the title. The situation in the division changed significantly this week with the announcement that Topuria (16-0) will face Charles Oliveira (35-10) for the lightweight belt at UFC 317 on June 28 in Las Vegas.
Pimblett stated that this announcement clears things up for him and believes that a fight against Gaethje or the opportunity to fight for the title will be next.
I’m planning for October. I think it’s most likely to be Justin Gaethje because Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier are fighting, who are 4 and 5.
Pimblett
Pimblett also added that he will be watching the fight between Topuria and Oliveira.
I’ll be in the arena when Ilia fights Charles. If Ilia wins, I can see him mentioning me, so you never know, it could be like Charles and get a win against Michael Chandler.
Pimblett
Pimblett concluded by saying that he believes it would be better for him if Topuria wins, as it could be his first title defense if he mentions it after the fight.
