Charles Oliveira Returns Triumphant in Rio de Janeiro

In a spectacular return, Charles Oliveira demonstrated his worth in the octagon, securing an impressive victory in Rio de Janeiro, just four months after suffering the toughest defeat of his career. Oliveira (36-11) submitted Mateusz Gamrot (25-4) with a rear-naked choke at 2 minutes and 48 seconds of the second round, in the main event of UFC Fight Night held at the Farmasi Arena. This victory came only 105 days after Oliveira was knocked out in a lightweight title fight.

I’m trying to hold back the tears right now. This is for you, the Brazilian fans. This is not for money, fame, or status. This is for Brazil.

Oliveira’s victory further solidifies his legacy in the world of mixed martial arts. He extended his UFC records for finishes (21) and submissions (17). In addition, he tied with Neil Magny on the list of wins in UFC history with 24, surpassed only by Jim Miller, who has 27. Immediately after his triumph, Oliveira reiterated his proposal to face the BMF champion and ranked lightweight Max Holloway, whom he already faced in 2015. The fight was a characteristic display from Oliveira from the start. Gamrot, who replaced Rafael Fiziev with little notice, tried to take the fight to the ground in the first round, but Oliveira managed to reverse the situation and take his back. In the second round, both fighters exchanged blows until Oliveira managed to apply a bodylock, lifting Gamrot and finally securing the submission. Oliveira, who was already number 4 in the lightweight ranking before this fight, faced Gamrot, who was ranked number 8. Holloway, for his part, is coming off a decision victory over Dustin Poirier in July.
