Charles Oliveira Returns Triumphant in Rio de Janeiro
In a spectacular return, Charles Oliveira demonstrated his worth in the octagon, securing a dominant victory in Rio de Janeiro. This victory comes less than four months after the toughest knockout loss of his career. Oliveira (36-11) submitted Mateusz Gamrot (25-4) with a rear naked choke at 2 minutes and 48 seconds of the second round, in the main event of the UFC Fight Night held at the Farmasi Arena. This victory came just 105 days after Oliveira suffered a knockout in a lightweight title fight against Ilia Topuria. The victory magnifies Oliveira’s already impressive legacy, extending his UFC records for finishes (21) and submissions (17). In addition, he tied with Neil Magny for the most wins in UFC history with 24, surpassed only by Jim Miller’s 27 victories. Immediately after his victory, Oliveira reiterated his desire to face the BMF champion and ranked lightweight, Max Holloway. They had already faced each other more than a decade ago, in 2015. Oliveira’s performance was characteristic from the start. He imposed his high-volume Muay Thai style and kept the pressure on Gamrot. Although Gamrot managed a takedown in the first round, Oliveira used the threat of an omoplata to reverse the position and take his opponent’s back. In the second round, both fighters exchanged blows until Oliveira secured a body lock and lifted Gamrot off the ground. Finally, Oliveira took Gamrot’s back and applied the choke. Before this victory, Oliveira was already ranked as the number 4 lightweight in the UFC. Gamrot, for his part, was ranked number 8. Holloway is coming off a decision victory over Dustin Poirier in July.I’m trying to hold back the tears right now. This is for you, the Brazilian fans. This isn’t about money, fame, or status. This is for Brazil.
