In a triumphant return that left everyone speechless, Charles Oliveira demonstrated his resilience and talent in the octagon, just four months after suffering the toughest knockout of his career. The event, held in Rio de Janeiro, witnessed Oliveira’s masterful performance, who submitted Mateusz Gamrot in the main event of UFC Fight Night.

Resounding Victory

Oliveira (36-11) achieved the submission over Gamrot (25-4) via a rear-naked choke at 2 minutes and 48 seconds of the second round. This victory came just 105 days after Oliveira was knocked out in a lightweight title fight by Ilia Topuria. Many in the sports world feared that Oliveira would return to action too soon, but the Brazilian fighter dispelled any doubts with a dominant performance.

I’m trying to hold back the tears right now. This is for you, the Brazilian fans. This is not about money, fame, or status. This is for Brazil.

This victory adds a new chapter to Oliveira’s legacy, who is already considered one of the greats of the UFC. The Brazilian fighter extended his UFC records for finishes (21) and submissions (17). In addition, he tied with Neil Magny on the list of wins in UFC history with 24, only behind Jim Miller, who has 27. Immediately after his victory, Oliveira reiterated his desire to face the BMF champion and ranked lightweight, Max Holloway. Both fighters faced each other more than a decade ago, in 2015, in a fight that ended with Holloway’s victory. Oliveira’s performance was characteristic from the start. With his aggressive and effective Muay Thai style, he pressured Gamrot. Although Gamrot managed a takedown in the first round, Oliveira knew how to reverse the situation and take his opponent’s back, demonstrating his skill on the ground. In the second round, Oliveira continued to dominate, until he secured a bodylock and lifted Gamrot off the ground, finally securing the chokehold. This triumph was especially significant for Oliveira, who had been waiting for the opportunity to fight in Brazil since March 2020, when he headlined an event in an empty stadium due to the pandemic. Before this victory, Oliveira was already in the number 4 position in the UFC lightweight ranking. For his part, Gamrot occupied the number 8 position. Max Holloway comes from a decision victory over Dustin Poirier in July.
