In a triumphant return to his country, Charles Oliveira demonstrated his worth in the octagon, securing an impressive victory in Rio de Janeiro. Just four months after suffering a knockout in his career, Oliveira submitted Mateusz Gamrot in the main event of UFC Fight Night. The victory came 105 days after his knockout loss to Ilia Topuria in a lightweight title fight. Despite concerns about a possible rushed return, Oliveira shone without showing any after-effects from his previous defeat.

I’m trying to hold back the tears right now. This is for you, the Brazilian fans. This is not about money, fame, or status. This is for Brazil.

Oliveira’s triumph expands his already impressive legacy in the UFC, solidifying his position as one of the most outstanding fighters in history.
  • 21 finishes in the UFC.
  • 17 submissions in the UFC.
  • 24 wins in the UFC, tied with Neil Magny.
After his victory, Oliveira reiterated his desire to face the BMF champion and lightweight contender, Max Holloway. Both fighters faced each other more than a decade ago, in 2015, with Holloway taking the victory.

From the start of the fight, Oliveira imposed his characteristic style, pressuring Gamrot with his high-volume Muay Thai. Gamrot, who replaced Rafael Fiziev, tried to take the fight to the ground, but Oliveira managed to reverse the situation and take his opponent’s back.

In the second round, Oliveira, after exchanging blows, managed to secure a bodylock and lift Gamrot off the ground, finishing with a rear naked choke.

Oliveira’s victory was a special moment, especially after his last fight in Brazil in March 2020, which took place in an empty stadium due to the pandemic. After winning the UFC championship in 2021, he finally had the opportunity to defend his title in his country.

Before the fight, Oliveira was ranked number 4 in the UFC lightweight rankings, while Gamrot was ranked number 8. Max Holloway, after defeating Dustin Poirier in July, announced that he would likely take a break for the rest of 2025 due to a right hand injury.
