In a demonstration of resilience and pure talent, Charles Oliveira starred in a triumphant return in Rio de Janeiro, solidifying his position in the world of mixed martial arts. After suffering the most painful knockout of his career, Oliveira, with an impressive record of 36-11, submitted Mateusz Gamrot (25-4) with a rear naked choke at 2 minutes and 48 seconds of the second round in the main event of UFC Fight Night at the Farmasi Arena. This victory came just 105 days after his knockout loss to Ilia Topuria in a lightweight title fight. Despite doubts about whether Oliveira was returning too soon, the fighter proved to be in top form.

I’m trying to hold back the tears right now. This is for you, the Brazilian fans. This isn’t about money, fame, or status. This is for Brazil.

Oliveira’s victory added more shine to his already outstanding career. The Brazilian extended his UFC records for finishes (21) and submissions (17). In addition, he tied with Neil Magny for the most wins in UFC history, with 24, surpassed only by Jim Miller, who has 27. Immediately after his triumph, Oliveira reiterated his desire to face the BMF champion and ranked lightweight, Max Holloway. Both fighters faced each other more than a decade ago, in 2015, where Holloway was victorious. Oliveira’s performance was characteristic of his style. From the beginning, he pressured Gamrot with his characteristic Muay Thai style. Gamrot, who replaced Rafael Fiziev, managed a takedown in the first round, but Oliveira reversed the position and took his opponent’s back. In the second round, both exchanged blows until Oliveira managed a body grip, lifting Gamrot. Finally, Oliveira secured the position and applied the choke, sealing a victory he had been waiting for since March 2020.

Before this victory, Oliveira was already in the number 4 position in the UFC lightweight ranking, while Gamrot occupied the number 8 position.

Holloway, for his part, is coming off a decision victory over Dustin Poirier in July and has expressed his intention to take a break until the end of 2025 due to a hand injury.
