The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, has announced his intention to legally address the fight that took place at UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden. Last Monday, Adams shared video footage of the fight, which involved Dillon Danis, former training partner of UFC star Conor McGregor, and several members of the team of UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. The altercation occurred on the stadium floor, moments before the main card of UFC 322 on November 15. Makhachev headlined the event and won the welterweight championship over Jack Della Maddalena. Although the UFC usually quickly leaves behind disputes between athletes “behind the scenes”, Adams made it clear that the city will take action.

These attacks at Madison Square Garden are completely unacceptable. The New York Police Department is already conducting a thorough investigation and all those responsible will be held accountable.

In the press conference following the UFC 322 event on November 15, UFC CEO Dana White announced that Danis was banned for life from future UFC events. Danis has a history of public altercations and had posted derogatory comments and photos, some of them false, about Makhachev online in the days leading up to UFC 322.

Several videos showed that Makhachev’s teammates, Magomed ‘Chanco’ Zaynukov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, were involved in the incident, including throwing punches at the back of Danis’s head. Danis was immediately escorted out of the stadium by security. Makhachev’s teammates were also removed and watched his world title performance from outside the venue.

The animosity between Danis and Makhachev’s team dates back to 2017, when McGregor challenged Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, for the UFC lightweight championship.
