New York City Mayor Weighs in on UFC 322 Fight

The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, has announced his intention to legally address the fight that took place at UFC 322, held at Madison Square Garden. On Monday, Adams shared video footage of the altercation, where Dillon Danis, Conor McGregor’s former training partner, and several members of the team of UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev could be identified. The fight occurred on the stadium floor, moments before the main card of UFC 322, on November 15th. Makhachev, who headlined the event, was crowned welterweight champion by defeating Jack Della Maddalena.

These assaults at Madison Square Garden are completely unacceptable. The New York Police Department is already conducting a full investigation, and everyone responsible will be held accountable.

Although the UFC usually quickly leaves behind altercations between athletes, Adams made it clear that the city will take action. Dana White, UFC CEO, announced at the post-event press conference that Danis has been permanently banned from future UFC events. Danis has a history of public altercations and had published derogatory comments and photos, some false, about Makhachev in the days leading up to UFC 322. Several videos showed that Magomed ‘Chancho’ Zaynukov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, Makhachev’s teammates, were involved in the incident, including throwing punches at Danis’s head. Danis was escorted out of the stadium by security. Makhachev’s teammates were also removed and watched the title fight from another location. The animosity between Danis and Makhachev’s team dates back to 2017, when McGregor challenged Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, for the UFC lightweight championship. In the night of the fight, Makhachev declared: “When you talk about someone for the last five years, when you meet him, you have to answer for what you said.”
