The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, has announced his intention to legally address the fight that took place at UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden. On Monday, Adams shared video footage of the fight, which involved Dillon Danis, former teammate of UFC star Conor McGregor, and several teammates of UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. The fight occurred on the arena floor, moments before the UFC 322 main card on November 15. Makhachev headlined the event and won the welterweight championship over Jack Della Maddalena. Although the UFC tends to overlook confrontations between athletes “behind the scenes”, Adams made it clear that the city will take action.
In the press conference after the UFC 322 fight on November 15, UFC CEO Dana White announced that Danis was banned for life from future UFC events. Danis has a history of public altercations and had posted derogatory comments and photos, some of them false, about Makhachev online in the days leading up to UFC 322. Several videos showed that Makhachev’s teammates, Magomed ‘Chanco’ Zaynukov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, were involved in the incident, including throwing punches at the back of Danis’s head. Danis was immediately escorted out of the arena by security. Makhachev’s teammates were also removed and watched his world title performance from outside the venue. The animosity between Danis and Makhachev’s team dates back to 2017, when McGregor challenged Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, for the UFC lightweight championship.These assaults at Madison Square Garden are completely unacceptable. The New York Police Department is already conducting a full investigation, and everyone responsible will be held accountable.
