Molly McCann Makes the Leap to Professional Boxing

Former UFC star Molly McCann has announced her foray into professional boxing and has signed with Matchroom, Eddie Hearn’s promoter. McCann retired from MMA in March after her loss to Alexia Thainara at UFC London, her fourth loss in five fights. The 35-year-old fighter was a fan favorite in the UK and provided several memorable moments, but will now continue her career in the ring instead of the octagon. McCann is expected to fight in the bantamweight category, according to Hearn.

McCann stated that he had practiced boxing before. Weight was not added to the Olympics and the only other option was MMA. Although MMA gave him a phenomenal life, something that boxing could never give him, his love was always in the ring.

McCann added that she is eager to fight and show everyone her boxing experience. She expects people to think she will run and try to knock out her opponents, which is correct, but in a polite manner. The boxer also mentioned that women’s boxing is at a turning point and that it’s a crucial moment in the sport. She received offers from all over, but sent Eddie a message, saying “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know”. Hearn showed confidence in McCann’s boxing ability after so long fighting in MMA.

She is really a boxer first. She has a phenomenal amateur experience, she has won championships.

Hearn added that with all due respect, many fighters who try to switch from the UFC to boxing are not really elite in this discipline. The most important thing is to stay active and keep building her boxing brand now. It’s the first time he’s worked with a fighter who is a superstar before even having a fight.
