Conor McGregor Withdraws from Presidential Election in Ireland

The renowned mixed martial arts fighter, Conor McGregor, has withdrawn his participation in the upcoming presidential elections in Ireland. Furthermore, he has described the electoral process as “undemocratic”. At 37 years old, the chances of McGregor appearing on the October ballot were minimal. To achieve this, he needed the support of 20 members of parliament or four local authorities. Despite trying to combine his vast popularity on social media with the support of influential figures, such as Elon Musk, to obtain the necessary nominations, McGregor announced on Sunday the cessation of his efforts.

“I want to assure the people of Ireland that this will not be my last election,” McGregor wrote on X. “You will see me campaigning again in the future, fighting for your rights and representing the best interests of our nation.”

While McGregor remains a popular figure on social media, his position within Ireland, especially as a political figure, is questionable. In November, he was found guilty in a sexual assault case stemming from a 2018 incident, in which he was accused of raping a woman in a Dublin hotel. A recent poll by an Irish media outlet revealed that only 7% of respondents would have voted for McGregor. McGregor (22-6) hasn’t competed in the UFC since suffering a leg fracture in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. He has expressed interest in participating in the UFC event scheduled at the White House in the United States in the summer of 2026.
