Conor McGregor Withdraws from Irish Presidential Race
The renowned mixed martial arts fighter, Conor McGregor, has decided to withdraw from the race for the presidency of Ireland. The announcement, made by McGregor himself, also included criticisms of the electoral process, calling it “undemocratic”. McGregor, 37, faced an uphill battle to appear on the October ballot. To achieve this, he needed the support of 20 members of parliament or four local authorities. Despite trying to mobilize his followers on social media and seeking the backing of figures like Elon Musk, the former UFC champion has chosen to abandon his efforts.Despite his popularity on social media, McGregor’s image as a political figure in Ireland is questioned. In November, he was found liable in a sexual assault case that occurred in 2018. A recent poll revealed that only 7% of respondents would vote for him. McGregor (22-6) hasn’t competed in the UFC since suffering a leg fracture in 2021. He has expressed his interest in participating in a UFC event scheduled for the summer of 2026 at the White House.“I want to assure the people of Ireland that this will not be my last election. You will see me campaigning again in the future, fighting for their rights and representing the best interests of our nation,” McGregor wrote on X.
