Conor McGregor Withdraws from Presidential Race in Ireland
The renowned mixed martial arts fighter, Conor McGregor, has decided to withdraw his candidacy for the Irish presidential elections. Furthermore, he has described the electoral process as “undemocratic”. Despite its popularity on social media, McGregor’s chances of appearing on the October ballot were minimal. To achieve this, he needed the support of 20 members of parliament or four local authorities. The former UFC champion tried to leverage his massive social media following and the support of influential figures like Elon Musk to obtain a nomination. However, on Sunday he announced that he would abandon those efforts.Although McGregor remains a popular figure on social media, his position as a political figure in Ireland is questionable. In November, he was found liable in a sexual assault case that occurred in 2018, in which he was accused of raping a woman in a Dublin hotel. A recent Sunday Independent poll in Ireland revealed that only 7% of respondents would have voted for McGregor. McGregor (22-6) hasn’t competed in the UFC since suffering a leg fracture in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. He has expressed interest in fighting at the UFC event planned at the White House in the United States in the summer of 2026.“I want to assure the people of Ireland that this will not be my last foray into politics,” McGregor wrote on X. “You will see me campaigning again in the future, fighting for your rights and representing the best interests of our nation.”
