The former UFC heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, has expressed his opinion on Tom Aspinall, describing him as a “one-trick pony” after his recent title fight against Ciryl Gane. Aspinall, who was defending his title for the first time, saw his match end in a “no contest” at UFC 321 on October 25, due to an accidental eye poke by Gane in the first round. The fight lasted only 4 minutes and 35 seconds, but Jones made it clear that he was more impressed with Gane, whom he submitted to win the heavyweight title in March 2023, than with Aspinall.
Jones added that he felt Gane was “warming up”. Jones, who retired from mixed martial arts in June, had been linked to a possible title unification with Aspinall in 2025. However, he has now expressed his interest in returning, mentioning his desire to face the current light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira. Meanwhile, the UFC plans to reschedule the championship fight between Aspinall and Gane. However, Aspinall is still recovering from the effects of the eye poke. According to the latest news, Aspinall has not regained full vision in either of his eyes.Tom is a great athlete, but I feel he’s a “one-trick pony”. I think his wrestling and jiu-jitsu are very overrated. He has a beautiful one-two combination. I was able to learn a lot about his patterns in his last fight. It’s really all. It’s the only thing he’s preparing very well.
