Ben Askren Hospitalized for Severe Pneumonia

Former MMA champion and former UFC welterweight champion, Ben Askren, is hospitalized due to severe pneumonia. The news was communicated by his wife through social media on Saturday.

“You may have heard that my husband Ben is going through something,” Amy Askren wrote on Facebook. “He developed severe pneumonia that appeared very suddenly. He is currently in the hospital and unable to respond to anything at this time. We appreciate all prayers for healing and peace.”

Amy also requested privacy for the family during this difficult time. The couple has three children and resides in Wisconsin.

Askren, who retired from MMA in 2019, had a distinguished career. He was a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion and a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. Before his time in the UFC, he won welterweight titles in Bellator MMA and One Championship.

His time in the UFC, in the final stage of his career in 2019, had a record of 1-2, including a victory over former champion Robbie Lawler.
