Tom Aspinall Undergoes Eye Surgeries After UFC Injury

UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall is in the process of recovery after suffering injuries in a fight. The fighter will undergo multiple eye surgeries to treat the after-effects of the wounds received during his title fight against Ciryl Gane in October. Aspinall (15-3) will have completed surgeries on both eyes by mid-January, according to statements made on his YouTube channel. The 32-year-old athlete has been inactive since Gane accidentally hit him in the eyes during their fight at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi. No further information was provided on the exact nature of the surgeries or a timeframe for his return.

“By the time this [statement] comes out, I’ll probably have already had eye surgery,” Aspinall said in a video posted on Sunday. “The next surgery is in mid-January. So we’re working to come back. That’s the plan.”

Aspinall’s first title defense ended without a result, when he was unable to continue after what was officially ruled an accidental eye poke. In the intervening months, Aspinall has stated that he believes Gane committed the foul on purpose. The UFC has expressed interest in rescheduling the heavyweight matchup as soon as Aspinall is cleared to train. Since the injury, Aspinall, originally from Salford, England, has indicated that he has dealt with persistent double vision and lack of eye movement.
