Phillies’ Zack Wheeler Undergoes Surgery for Blood Clot

PHILADELPHIA – Phillies ace Zack Wheeler underwent surgery on Monday to remove a blood clot in his right upper arm. The team has reported that the pitcher’s recovery time remains uncertain.

The Phillies announced that Wheeler underwent a thrombolysis procedure performed by Dr. Paul DiMuzio at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

The 35-year-old player was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday due to the blood clot, after experiencing a worsening of shoulder pain.

Wheeler, who was selected for his third All-Star team last month, has a 10-5 record with a 2.71 ERA in 24 starts this season. In addition, he leads the league with 195 strikeouts in 149 2/3 innings. In three of the last four seasons, he has pitched at least 192 innings.
