Yordan Alvarez Nears Return with Astros

The Houston Astros slugger, Yordan Alvarez, is about to return to action after a hand injury that kept him off the field for almost a month, according to manager Joe Espada. Alvarez, who hasn’t played since May 3 due to inflammation in his right hand, participated in a batting practice session on Thursday before the start of a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“This is the best way I’ve seen it and this is how it’s felt the best,” Espada said. “So, it’s very good news.”

The plan is for Alvarez to face around 50 pitches from minor league players on Friday, with the goal of preparing him to play without the need for a minor league rehab assignment.

“That will be his way of preparing and being ready for the games,” explained Espada.

The main challenge for Alvarez’s return has been controlling inflammation as his activity increases.

After batting on Thursday, Alvarez commented through an interpreter: “I felt good. Now I just have to wait to see how the hand reacts to batting. I hope to be able to return soon.”

Alvarez admitted that it has been frustrating to be out for so long, especially since he was initially expected to be absent for only a few days. The time on the injured list has been longer than expected, as the team seeks a full recovery to avoid long-term problems during the season.

“This is something delicate,” he said. “I could have returned earlier, but as soon as we saw the hand and how it was reacting due to the inflammation, that’s why it has taken a little longer than I anticipated.”
