Yordan Alvarez leaves the game due to an ankle injury

The Houston Astros’ All-Star left fielder, Yordan Alvarez, left Monday night’s game against the Texas Rangers due to a sprained left ankle. Alvarez suffered the injury while crossing the plate and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury.

It didn’t look good on the field.

Joe Espada, Astros manager
Through a team spokesperson, Alvarez declined to speak with reporters after the game until he knew more about the nature of his injury, but he was seen leaving the Astros clubhouse on crutches and with a boot on his left foot. Alvarez appeared to slip while crossing the plate in the first inning, scoring from first base due to a throwing error by Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter on an infield single by Carlos Correa. Alvarez was attended to by an athletic trainer outside the Astros’ dugout and then helped down the stairs. Zachary Cole entered the game in right field in the second inning, with Jesus Sanchez moving to left. Cole hit a home run and drove in three runs after replacing the injured Alvarez. The team announced the injury a couple of innings after Alvarez left the game.

I saw it coming, and when he stepped on the plate, I had a front-row seat. His ankle twisted a little, then when he planted again, I saw it twist again. It’s not pretty. You don’t want to see that.

Jeremy Pena, Astros shortstop
Alvarez entered Monday’s game batting .273 with six home runs and 27 RBIs, but has been limited to 47 games due to a right hand fracture that forced him to miss 101 games. Houston moved within a half-game of the Seattle Mariners atop the American League West and moved three games ahead of Cleveland and Texas for the final American League wild card.
