Yesavage Will Start Game 1 of the World Series for the Blue Jays
The Blue Jays have selected rookie Trey Yesavage to pitch in Game 1 of the World Series against the current champion Dodgers. However, it has not yet been decided whether Bo Bichette will be on the roster, according to manager John Schneider. Bichette has been out of action since suffering a sprain in his left knee on September 6. Although he tried to return for the American League Championship Series against the Mariners, on October 11 he was unable to run without feeling pain. Bichette, a two-time All-Star, has shown a remarkable recovery. The player has been taking ground balls at second base and facing live pitching. The team is considering Bichette for the shortstop position, second base, or as a designated hitter. The decision of who would start Game 1 came down to Yesavage or Kevin Gausman. Ultimately, it was decided to give Gausman an extra day of rest. Gausman is expected to pitch Game 2 or 3. The other expected pitchers for the Blue Jays are Shane Bieber and Max Scherzer. The Dodgers will have Blake Snell and Yoshinobu Yamamoto as starters. Yesavage, 22, will make his seventh start in his career and will be the first rookie to pitch Game 1 of the World Series since 2006. Yesavage debuted in the Major Leagues on September 15th and has proven his worth with his combination of splitter and fastball, surprising the best teams in the league. In his postseason debut, he struck out 11 batters without allowing any runs against the Yankees. We’re reaching the limit with this. I could see all three options happening, to be honest. We’ll have to talk to him after today’s training and see how he feels.

Yesavage was selected in the first round of last year’s draft and has quickly risen through the minor leagues, becoming a key piece for the Blue Jays in October. On Friday, he will take the mound in the franchise’s first World Series game in 32 years.I’ve been able to handle this as diligently as possible. I try to treat it as if it’s not so high pressure mentally, but I know it’s there, so I think I’ve developed it over time.

It’s really special. I have guys from Dunedin to Vancouver, New Hampshire, Buffalo texting me, congratulating me. It’s a testament to how united we are as an organization.
