Jake Cousins Suffers New Setback in His Return

Yankees reliever Jake Cousins experienced pectoral discomfort after pitching in two batting practice sessions, representing another setback in his attempt to return to the mound for the first time since last fall.

According to manager Aaron Boone, Cousins will not pitch again in the next four or five days.

Before the start of spring training, Boone had announced that Cousins was suffering from a right forearm strain, putting his participation in the opening game on March 27 in doubt.

Cousins, a 30-year-old right-handed pitcher, threw in a batting practice for the injured designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton on May 6. Boone indicated that Cousins completed an additional session before the pectoral issue forced his suspension.

We don’t think it’s anything serious, but enough to keep him out for a few days.

Boone added that Cousins underwent tests that did not reveal any issues with his shoulder.

In 37 appearances as a reliever last year, Cousins had an ERA of 2.37, striking out 53 batters and walking 20 in 38 innings.

Boone also reported that a date has not yet been set for Stanton to begin his minor league rehab assignment. The five-time All-Star has been out of action since spring training due to soreness in both elbows.
