SEATTLE – New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera was carted off the field in an ambulance after suffering a left ankle injury during the ninth inning of Monday night’s game against the Mariners, which the Yankees won with a score of 11-5.

Cabrera’s injury occurred after an unusual slide while stretching to touch the plate and score the Yankees’ final run thanks to a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge.

Manager Aaron Boone reported that Cabrera was fitted with a splint on his left ankle before being transported by ambulance on a stretcher. Cabrera was taken to a hospital, accompanied by the team’s athletic trainer, Tim Lentych.

I think everyone understands that it was a pretty serious situation. So, we just pray for our player tonight and hope for the best. We trust that he is in good hands while he spends the night here.

Cabrera, 26 years old and originally from Venezuela, remained on the ground for several minutes, visibly affected, while being attended to by medical personnel.

Just before they took him out on a stretcher, he called me and said, ‘Hey, did I score?’. That shows the kind of person he is. Something like that happens to him, and the only thing he’s worried about, despite the pain and everything, is whether he scored.

Aaron Judge, Yankees Player

In his fourth season in MLB, Cabrera has established himself as a regular player in the Yankees’ lineup. This season, he is batting .243, with one home run and 12 RBIs.

He cares about everyone in this clubhouse. He loves being a Yankee. He wears his jersey with pride. This is a difficult situation, especially for a guy who has fought his whole life and finally had the opportunity to be our everyday player and has been doing very well.
