Shane Smith to the Injured List: White Sox Adjust Their Roster

The Chicago White Sox have placed All-Star right-handed pitcher Shane Smith on the 15-day injured list due to a left ankle sprain. The move is retroactive to Wednesday. It has not yet been determined when Smith suffered the injury. The rookie last participated in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, where he faced two batters in the eighth inning, hitting Eugenio Suarez with a pitch before retiring James Wood with a ground ball to end the inning. Smith, 25, has a 3-7 record with a 4.26 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 18 starts with the White Sox. He is the first rookie pitcher in franchise history to be selected for the All-Star team. Additionally, Chicago has called up right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez from Triple-A Charlotte, activated outfielder Brooks Baldwin from the 10-day injured list, and optioned outfielder Will Robertson to Charlotte. Gonzalez, 23, had a 6-0 record with an ERA of 4.44 in 16 relief appearances in Charlotte. Previously, he had an ERA of 4.50 in two appearances with the White Sox this season. Baldwin, 24, had been sidelined with a lower back strain suffered earlier this month. He is batting .227 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 54 games this season. Robertson, 27, went 0-6 with four strikeouts in four games with Chicago. He was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations on July 10. Robertson went 1-10 in three games with the Blue Jays.
