Austin Wells Drives Dominican Republic to Semifinals with Historic Home Run
In an unparalleled display of power, Austin Wells hit a three-run home run that not only sealed the victory for the Dominican Republic over South Korea, but also inscribed the team in the record books of the World Baseball Classic. Wells’ hit, connected in the seventh inning, stopped the game under the knockout rule, with a final score of 10-0 in favor of the Dominicans, securing their place in the semifinals of the tournament. The home run represented number 14 for the Dominican Republic in the tournament, tying the record set by Mexico in 2009. Wells, who had already hit a home run in the victory against the Netherlands, demonstrated his ability to excel in key moments.Despite having a team full of stars like Juan Soto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Fernando Tatis Jr., Wells has adapted quickly to the team. It was he who took the lead with the crucial hit. Wells’ home run placed him on the same home run list as Soto, Guerrero, Tatis, Junior Caminero, and Oneil Cruz.“Trying to win today and being able to advance to the next round was the goal. Being able to help today and be a part of this was a lot of fun. Definitely a special moment.”

Although Wells has maintained a more discreet profile in his celebrations.“The experience has been incredible. It has been an incredible honor to be able to represent my family and the Dominican Republic. It’s something I will never forget and I hope to have the opportunity again.”

Dominicans reach the semifinals for the first time since the 2013 championship. Now, they will have the opportunity to surpass Mexico and claim the home run record for themselves, as well as get closer to another title, when they face the United States.“I haven’t been a big hitter in my career. I’m taking notes. Many times I just black out when I hit a home run. It’s been difficult for me to show any kind of emotion. Maybe next time.”

“This is something special for us because we are a very close team, a compact team. You can feel the emotion, the energy in the clubhouse. We work as a team. This is something very special for us. Now we have to focus on the next rival on Sunday and keep playing as we have done so far.”
