Aaron Boone Evaluates Anthony Volpe’s Defensive Performance

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has expressed his opinion on Anthony Volpe’s performance on the field, after committing his twelfth error of the season in the recent 4-1 loss to Toronto. Volpe, who won the American League Gold Glove as a shortstop in his rookie season in 2023, currently shares the lead in errors in the American League. The most recent error by Volpe, a throw that went astray to first base, allowed a run in the fifth inning for Toronto. “I rushed the throw and sent it poorly, which made it difficult for Goldy to receive,” Volpe commented.

“I rushed the launch and sent it poorly, which made it difficult for Goldy to receive.”

Boone acknowledged that Volpe’s error count is high, but emphasized that he is not concerned about his overall defensive performance. “He’s still making a lot of plays, he’s still making a lot of plays,” Boone said. “He just hasn’t been as consistent as in his first two years. We’re talking about three or four plays.” Carlos Rodón, Yankees’ left-handed pitcher, also expressed his support for Volpe. “You just have to support him,” Rodón said. “He’ll get better.” The Yankees have a 2-6 record against Toronto this season, losing the last five meetings. In addition, they have a 10-17 record against opponents in the American League East Division. “A month has gone by where we haven’t been at our best,” Boone said. “We need to, obviously, start playing better consistently and get some wins. That’s the only thing we can really worry about.”
