Victor Robles Receives Suspension for Incidents in Triple-A Game
Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles has been suspended for 10 games and fined for his behavior during the third inning of a Triple-A game, where he was on a rehabilitation assignment, Major League Baseball announced this Tuesday.
The incident occurred when the first pitch from Las Vegas starter Joey Estes to Robles was an inside pitch. Robles, attempting to avoid the hit, reacted unexpectedly.
After taking a few steps behind the plate and dropping his bat, Robles picked it up and threw it in Estes’ direction, resulting in his immediate ejection from the game by home plate umpire Joe McCarthy.
Robles, who had been hit by pitches on three occasions during his last four games with Tacoma, advanced towards the mound while shouting at the pitcher, but was restrained by McCarthy and others present.
Victor Robles’ Statements on Social Media
The player publicly apologized through his social media for getting carried away by frustration. “Coming back from a long rehabilitation and being out of the game for most of the season has been a physical and mental challenge,” Robles expressed. “Adding to this is the recent passing of my mother, which has been incredibly difficult, and I have been doing everything possible to stay strong. It’s not an excuse, but a context that I think you deserve to understand where I’m coming from.”
The suspension will take effect on the first day that Robles is activated on the Mariners’ roster. The player is in the process of recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in April.
Robles has filed an appeal, so the sanction is suspended until the process is complete.
