Tigers’ Jackson Jobe to Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Detroit Tigers’ young pitcher Jackson Jobe will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, which will sideline him for the rest of the season, the team announced on Wednesday. Dr. Keith Meister, team physician and orthopedic consultant for the Texas Rangers, will perform the surgery, although the date has not yet been scheduled.

It’s obviously very disappointing news. We really feel for Jackson. Obviously, everyone sees the talent, and he impressed this team a lot in his short time here. He’s going to overcome this. He’s a very determined person.

Jobe, who was considered the No. 7 prospect in MLB before the season started, had a 4-1 record with a 4.22 ERA in 10 starts this year. He accumulated 39 strikeouts and 27 walks in 49 innings. The right-handed pitcher felt discomfort in his elbow during a start against the San Francisco Giants on May 28 and was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a Grade 1 right flexor strain.

As is the standard process in our medical evaluation process, we sought additional evaluations. Through that evaluation process, an UCL injury was also discovered. From there, there were a series of conversations between Jackson, the doctors and the medical staff, and ultimately, it was determined that surgery was the way to go.

Jobe was selected with the third pick of the 2021 amateur draft by the Tigers. He made his debut in the Major Leagues late last season, when he was called up during the Tigers’ fight for the playoffs and pitched a total of four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, in two relief appearances. Detroit currently has the best record in the American League with 44-25.
