Anaheim, California – Kurt Suzuki takes over the Los Angeles Angels with a monumental task ahead and a limited time to show results. Suzuki has been named as the sixth manager of the Angels in the last eight seasons and has received a one-year contract, according to general manager Perry Minasian. Minasian also has one year remaining on his contract with the Angels, who are mired in a streak of ten consecutive losing seasons.

I am here because I want to lead this team. I am here because I want to help these players. I want to do what’s best for this city and this organization.

The appointment of Suzuki, 42, comes under unusual pressure. The team hasn’t reached the playoffs since 2014 nor had a winning season since 2015, which adds an extra layer of challenge. Both Minasian and Suzuki have expressed the urgency of reversing the situation, regardless of the duration of their contracts. Suzuki has stated that he feels motivated and committed to the team, and that he is focused on leading and helping the players reach their full potential. Suzuki was selected by Minasian from among several candidates, including Albert Pujols. Minasian did not reveal details about how negotiations with Pujols ended, who also has no experience as a coach or manager in the Major Leagues. Minasian is confident that Suzuki will adapt quickly to his new role, based on his experience as a catcher and his leadership ability. Suzuki, known for his performance in the field and his ability to manage the game, has been a leader in the locker room, especially in his relationship with the pitchers. Suzuki replaces Ron Washington, whose contract was not renewed after two losing seasons. Brad Ausmus, Joe Maddon, Phil Nevin, and interim Ray Montgomery have also held the position in recent years. Suzuki avoided answering questions about the Angels’ third baseman, Anthony Rendon, who did not play this season due to a hip injury. Rendon has one year remaining on his contract with the Angels.
