TORONTO – Blue Jays outfielder George Springer was involved in a curious play during Sunday’s game against the Athletics.
Springer, after connecting a simple run producer, celebrated his teammate Alejandro Kirk’s play that reduced the deficit to 3-2, reaching third base.
However, the joy was short-lived. Springer was called out after a video review.
The Athletics’ third baseman, Max Schuemann, kept his glove on the Blue Jays’ runner while Springer celebrated. This decision prevented Addison Barger, one of Toronto’s most important hitters, from having the opportunity to bat with runners on second and third base.
Schuemann, who had just entered the game as a defensive replacement, had taken Miguel Andujar’s place. The Athletics came into the game with a losing streak, having lost five consecutive games and 16 of the last 17.
