George Springer Drives in Blue Jays on Canada Day
In an exciting celebration of Canada Day, the Toronto Blue Jays achieved a resounding 12-5 victory over the Yankees, closing to within a single game of the lead in the American League East Division.
The outfielder George Springer had a stellar performance, setting a personal record with seven RBIs, including his ninth career grand slam.
Springer’s seven RBIs tied for the second-most by a Blue Jays player in a home game in franchise history, only surpassed by Edwin Encarnación, who drove in nine runs in 2015.
Andrés Giménez also contributed to the triumph with a three-run home run that put the Blue Jays ahead on the scoreboard, overcoming a 2-0 deficit against Yankees pitcher Max Fried. After the Yankees tied the game 4-4 in the seventh inning, Toronto unleashed its offense against the Yankees’ bullpen.
Springer had an outstanding performance at bat, connecting three hits in four turns. He started the comeback with a solo home run in the fourth inning against Fried and extended the lead to 9-5 with the grand slam against Luke Weaver, after a single by Ernie Clement that put the Blue Jays ahead.
Springer has 13 home runs this season.
Toronto won the first two games of the four-game series and moved within one game of the Yankees for the first time since before April 20th.
The Yankees struggled with runners in scoring position, hitting 2 for 17, while the Blue Jays were more effective, with 5 for 7.
After a June with a 13-14 record, the Yankees fell to 10-14 against their American League East Division rivals.
