Luis Severino to the Injured List: Athletics Lose Their Star Pitcher

Right-handed pitcher Luis Severino, who had recently shown the expected level after his arrival as a free agent to the Athletics, has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a strain in his left oblique.

The measure is retroactive to Wednesday.

To cover this absence, the Athletics called up left-handed pitcher Hogan Harris from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Severino signed a contract for 67 million dollars and three years with the Athletics in December, but has the option to opt out of the agreement after next season. This was the largest contract in Athletics history, a team that is usually on a low budget, although they have since made similar deals with Brent Rooker (60 million dollars in five years) and Lawrence Butler (65.5 million dollars in seven years), anticipating their move to Las Vegas in 2028.

Unless an extension is agreed upon, Severino, 31, will likely not be part of those plans.

Although he had a slow start this season, in his last five starts he achieved a 4-1 record with an ERA of 2.93 and 30 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings. This improved his record to 6-11 with an ERA of 4.82.
