Marcus Semien Suffers Foot Injury and Could Miss the Rest of the Season
Texas Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien is facing a considerable period of inactivity due to a fracture and a sprain in his left foot. The injury, suffered recently, could keep him out of action for between four and six weeks, which would compromise his participation in the MLB regular season, unless the team manages to advance deep into the playoffs. Semien was placed on the injured list on Saturday, marking only the second time in his 13-year career that this has happened. The injury occurred on Thursday in Kansas City, during the first inning of a game that the Rangers lost 6-4. The player hit the ball with his left foot, resulting in a fracture of the third metatarsal and a sprain of the Lisfranc ligament. At the time of the injury, the Rangers were 4.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners in the race for the last wild card spot in the American League and 6.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West Division. The only other time Semien was on the injured list was at the beginning of the 2017 season, when he missed almost three months due to a right wrist injury. Before this foot injury, Semien had played in almost every Rangers game since joining the team in 2022, demonstrating remarkable consistency. Semien, 34, has been a key element for the Rangers this season, batting .230, with 15 home runs, 62 RBIs, and leading the team in runs scored with 62. Since joining the club, he leads Texas in games played, hits, triples, walks, runs scored, and total bases, demonstrating his importance to the team. The player expressed his surprise at the situation, acknowledging that being on the injured list was something new for him after so long.We hope to be back in the fight and see where we are by that time. I’ll be watching for a while. The Lisfranc is what we’re most worried about, just trying to keep it intact by staying off of it. If you break it, it could be a year. I’m just trying to keep that intact and let the other fracture heal.
