The Colorado Rockies suffered a painful 21-0 defeat to the San Diego Padres on Saturday night in Denver, leaving them with a 6-33 record. This season start equals the worst record in 39 games in Major League Baseball since 1900, shared with the 1988 Baltimore Orioles.
Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts hit home runs in the fifth inning, contributing to a total of five home runs for San Diego. Stephen Kolek (2-0) pitched a scoreless game in his second major league start. This victory represents the largest shutout in Padres franchise history and ties for the third largest in MLB since 1901.
The Rockies have lost eight consecutive games and are heading for their seventh consecutive losing season, with the possibility of a third straight 100-loss season under manager Bud Black.
Despite the difficulties, Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt backed Black before Saturday’s game, expressing his confidence that the season can still improve.
I think our guys are still playing hard, and that’s what I see,” Schmidt said. “The guys are working hard every day, they’re coming with energy, for the most part. I don’t think we’re [at that point of firing Black]. The guys still believe in what we’re doing and where we’re going. We’re all frustrated.”

Colorado has lost its last four games by at least eight runs each, being the first team to allow 10 or more runs in four consecutive games since the 2021 Orioles.
Schmidt mentioned that he seeks “growth” as the season progresses.
I’m so sorry for the fans, I’m so sorry for the people here,” he said. “I know we’re better than we’ve played, but we’re not good right now. We have to fight and get to the other side.

He added that there are still many games to play and that he believes they can turn the situation around, but that it will require the effort of the whole team. The players are working to improve.
