Seth Lugo and the Kansas City Royals Close to a Multi-Year Deal
Right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo and the Kansas City Royals are on the verge of finalizing a multi-year contract extension, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Lugo, 35 years old, was considered one of the players with the greatest potential to be transferred this season and one of the best arms in the next class of free agents.
Lugo’s performance has been consistent, maintaining an ERA of 3.60 or lower in the last five seasons. This is despite having a below-average pitch velocity and strikeout rates that are good, but not exceptional. The right-handed pitcher’s ability to limit runs and hard contact is partly due to his repertoire of nine different pitches. This variety provides him with the flexibility to make adjustments during games, something that only a few MLB starters share.
In the current season, Lugo has a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA and has achieved 99 strikeouts in 113 innings.
