BOSTON – Boston Red Sox first baseman Romy González left Wednesday night’s game after colliding with Texas Rangers first baseman Josh Smith while attempting to beat out an infield hit.
Both players lay on the field for a while, being attended to by their teams’ athletic trainers. González was on the right field line, while Smith was next to the base.
There was no information about González’s injury.
Smith backed up a bit to handle a throw from third base and collided with González’s left leg as he reached the base, causing the Boston player to fall.
Initially, Gonzalez was ruled safe on the play that scored a run to put the Red Sox ahead, 4-3, but the call was overturned after the Rangers challenged, taking the run off the board and ending the inning.
The position is now short-staffed for Boston after Triston Casas lost the season when he tore a tendon in his left knee last week running to first base. González is expected to see most of the game at the position.
González was replaced in the game by Abraham Toro, who was called up from Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
