Boston Red Sox Roster Moves
The Boston Red Sox made significant moves to their roster on Thursday, affecting both the offense and the pitching staff. First baseman Nathaniel Lowe was placed on the paternity list. Lowe, who signed with the Red Sox on August 18 after being released by Washington, has had an immediate impact on the team. Since joining Boston, Lowe is batting .296 with a home run and seven RBIs in nine games, solidifying himself as the starting first baseman. To cover Lowe’s absence, outfielder Rob Refsnyder was activated from the 10-day injured list. Refsnyder, who was out of action for 12 games due to a left oblique strain, has had a productive season. The 34-year-old player is batting .272 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 54 games. Refsnyder was included in the lineup as the designated hitter on Thursday against Baltimore. In addition to the changes in the offense, the Red Sox also made adjustments to their pitching staff. Right-handed pitcher Justin Slaten was activated from the 60-day injured list, while left-hander Jovani Moran was sent to Triple-A Worcester. Slaten went 1-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 24 games, but hasn’t pitched for Boston since May 28 due to shoulder inflammation. Moran has an ERA of 6.75 in two appearances this season and did not participate in two games after the Red Sox called him up on Tuesday. We needed this. We’ve struggled against left-handed pitchers lately. I think the quality of the pitchers is one of the reasons and not having it is another. It’s just a good at-bat against them. It puts them in a situation where they have to make decisions later in the game or at the beginning of the game. Bringing in a righty and then we can maximize the bench and use them accordingly.
