Red Sox’s Tanner Houck to Undergo Tommy John Surgery
Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck will not play again this season. Manager Alex Cora confirmed that Houck will undergo Tommy John surgery. Houck, who was an All-Star last season, was placed on the injured list in mid-May due to a strain in his right flexor. At that time, his record was 0-3 with an ERA of 8.04 in nine starts. Subsequently, he was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Thursday.Houck had an outstanding 2024 season, finishing seventh in the American League with an ERA of 3.12 in 30 starts. However, after going on the injured list, he was only able to make five rehabilitation appearances.Tanner will undergo Tommy John surgery. He went to see Dr. [Keith] Meister in Texas, and that was the recommendation. We don’t have a date yet, but he will have it.

Houck earned his first All-Star appearance by posting an 8-6 record with a 2.54 ERA in the first half of the season. After the break, he struggled, going 1-4 with a 4.23 ERA. Houck pitched an inning in the All-Star Game in Texas last year, allowing three hits, including a home run by Shohei Ohtani. Houck is the third starting pitcher for Boston to suffer a season-ending injury. Hunter Dobbins tore his right ACL and Kutter Crawford underwent right wrist surgery. The Red Sox hope that the addition of right-handed pitcher Dustin May, coming from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline, will bolster their pitching staff. He is expected to make his first start for the Red Sox on Wednesday at Fenway. Dustin May, sitting in the dugout on Saturday, commented on his arrival in Boston: “It was definitely a journey of emotions, with ups and downs. Sad to leave because I’ve been there my whole career, but very, very excited to join this organization.” May knew that his days as an opener with the Dodgers would likely come to an end this season, with some starters waiting to return from the injured list. “I was kind of pushed out,” he said. “We have quite a few guys in that organization. I couldn’t be more excited and thrilled to be here and be a part of this.”It was a tough year for him, a tough year for us. But he will comply with the rehabilitation, he will do his job, and when he returns, he will be fine.
