ANAHEIM, Calif. – Kutter Crawford, pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, suffered an “accident” off the field that will require surgery that will end his season, according to manager Alex Cora this Wednesday. Cora added that the 29-year-old player was not involved in any “irresponsible” activity.

It hasn’t been a great year for him. It’s just an accident.

Alex Cora
Crawford has been out of action all season due to a right knee injury, which he initially suffered in his third game of 2024. In that season, he had a 9-16 record with a 4.36 ERA in 33 starts, tying for first place in the American League.

It’s a shame because we were talking about the depth we had in spring training and the options we had in the starting rotation. And now it’s getting thinner.

Alex Cora
Crawford was one of the most consistent pitchers in 2024, despite pitching much of the season with patellar tendon discomfort. He led the Red Sox with 183⅔ innings pitched and 175 strikeouts, although he also allowed the most home runs in the league, with 34. I was hoping to recover with a full winter of rest and rehabilitation, but I suffered a setback during the offseason and was unable to pitch in spring training. He was placed on the 60-day injured list in March. Cora also reported that third baseman Alex Bregman, who has been out since May 23 due to a quadriceps injury, will likely not return until after the All-Star break. Bregman, who was batting .299 with an OPS of .938, 11 home runs, 17 doubles, 35 RBIs, and 32 runs in 51 games when he suffered the injury, has been running but has not resumed baseball activities. Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, stated that his client, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent after this season, is open to re-signing with the Red Sox.
