Red Sox Activate Injured List for Wilyer Abreu
The [Boston Red Sox](/mlb/team/_/name/bos/boston-red-sox) have placed outfielder Wilyer Abreu on the 10-day injured list, ahead of their four-game series against the [New York Yankees](/mlb/team/_/name/nyy/new-york-yankees) on Thursday.
Abreu suffers a strain in his right calf. Although he initially thought he wouldn’t need a stint on the injured list, the team decided to take precautions.
In a corresponding move on the roster, Boston called up outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia from Triple-A Worcester.
Nicknamed “The Password”, a nod to his name, Garcia has been on fire at the plate since being promoted to Worcester in early summer, connecting 17 home runs in 66 games.
Garcia, a right-handed hitter, is considered the number 3 prospect in the Boston minor league system.
The Red Sox come into the four-game series in the Bronx 1.5 games behind the Yankees, who are in second place in the American League East. Despite losing three games in a row, Boston still holds the second wild card spot in the American League.
