TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rays staged an epic comeback by defeating the Baltimore Orioles with a score of 12-8 this Wednesday night. This victory represents the biggest comeback so far this season in Major League Baseball.

The Tampa Bay team tied the biggest comeback in franchise history. Previously, the Rays managed to recover from an eight-run deficit on August 18, 2012, against the Los Angeles Angels, and on July 25, 2009, against Toronto.

The last time the Orioles squandered an eight-run lead was on April 28, 2017, in a 14-11 loss against the New York Yankees. The largest lead squandered in franchise history occurred in a 14-13 loss to Detroit on April 25, 1901, when the team was in Milwaukee.

Baltimore built an eight-run lead in the second inning. However, Brandon Lowe hit a home run in the fifth inning, tying the game. Jonathan Aranda drove in two runs with a single in the seventh inning, capping a four-run rally for the Rays.

Before Wednesday’s game, teams were 0-134 when trailing by eight or more runs at any point in the season.

Last season, only three teams managed to overcome a deficit of eight runs or more in the majors. The most recent was Pittsburgh, which erased a nine-run deficit to beat Cincinnati on November 23, 2023.
