Jake Burger to Injured List: Rangers Lose Their First Baseman
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers will be forced to do without Jake Burger, their first baseman, who will be placed on the injured list for the second time this season. The news comes just before the team resumes activity after the All-Star break.
On Wednesday, the Rangers made the decision to place Burger on the 10-day injured list due to a left quadriceps strain. The move was applied retroactively to Sunday, a day after Burger was struck out as a pinch hitter in the tenth inning against Houston.
Burger had already left the game in the sixth inning of the opening game of the three-game series against the Astros, leaders of the American League West Division, on Friday night.
The Rangers, with a record of 48-49, have not yet announced corresponding moves on their roster. The team will kick off a three-game home series on Friday night, facing Detroit, which despite a four-game losing streak, holds the best record in Major League Baseball (59-38).
In his first season with Texas, Burger has participated in 75 games, recording a batting average of .228, with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. After returning from his previous stint on the injured list, he only played in 10 games. He was out of action for 10 games, from June 21st to July 2nd, due to a left oblique strain.
The Rangers acquired Burger in a trade with Miami in December. After batting .190 with three home runs and a team-record 32 strikeouts in his first 30 games (100 at-bats), the Rangers briefly sent him to Triple-A Round Rock. Since his return to the majors, in 45 games, he has batted .250 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs.
