Rangers Bolster Rotation with Merrill Kelly

The Texas Rangers are strengthening their pitching staff by acquiring right-hander Merrill Kelly from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to sources close to the situation. Kelly, known for his ability to pitch a large number of innings, has shown good performance recently. In his last 10 starts, he has recorded an ERA of 2.56, reducing his season average to 3.22. After an early exit in his second start of the season, he has pitched at least five innings in each start. At 36 years old, Kelly will reach free agency after this season. Although he doesn’t stand out for the speed of his fastball, his changeup is his best pitch, complemented by good location and breaking pitches. Kelly, who has played his seven MLB seasons with Arizona, was a key piece in the Diamondbacks’ path to the 2023 World Series, striking out 28 batters and maintaining an ERA of 2.25 in 24 innings.
