Randy Rodriguez of the Giants Requires Tommy John Surgery
San Francisco Giants reliever Randy Rodríguez will need to undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced on Friday. Last week, the Giants placed Rodriguez on the 15-day injured list due to a sprain in his right elbow. Rodriguez, who will turn 26 next week, has a 3-5 record with a 1.78 ERA in 50⅔ innings this season. In addition, he has four saves and 67 strikeouts, with only 11 walks. In 2024, Rodríguez had a 3-2 record with a 4.30 ERA as a rookie. After the Giants traded Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees on July 31, Rodríguez became San Francisco’s closer. He earned three saves in August, but also suffered three losses. The last pitch he threw was hit by Milwaukee’s William Contreras for a solo home run in the ninth inning, with two outs, in the Brewers’ 5-4 victory on August 22. Since Rodríguez was placed on the injured list, right-handed pitcher Ryan Walker has resumed the closer role he had at the beginning of the season.“He’s had some days of soreness and we’ve been very careful with him during the season,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said Friday. “It just got to a head now.”
