Randy Rodriguez of the San Francisco Giants Requires Tommy John Surgery
San Francisco Giants reliever Randy Rodríguez will need to undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced on Friday. Last week, the Giants placed Rodriguez on the 15-day injured list due to a sprain in his right elbow. Rodriguez, who will turn 26 next week, has a 3-5 record with a 1.78 ERA in 50 2/3 innings this season. He has earned four saves and struck out 67 batters, with only 11 walks. In 2024, Rodríguez had a 3-2 record with a 4.30 ERA in his rookie season. After the Giants traded Camilo Doval on July 31, Rodriguez became San Francisco’s closer. He earned three saves in August, but also suffered three losses. His last pitch was hit by Milwaukee’s William Contreras for a solo home run with two outs in the ninth inning, in the Brewers’ 5-4 victory on August 22. Since Rodríguez was placed on the injured list, right-handed pitcher Ryan Walker has again taken on the role of closer that he had at the beginning of the season. He’s had days where he’s felt pain and we’ve been very careful with him during the season. It just came to a head now.
