Don Mattingly Joins Phillies Coaching Staff

The Philadelphia Phillies have added Don Mattingly, former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins, as bench coach for the team managed by Rob Thomson. This incorporation marks Mattingly’s reunion with his son, Preston, who serves as the Phillies’ general manager. Mattingly, with a distinguished career in baseball, is in his 23rd consecutive season as a coach in the Major Leagues. Previously, he spent three seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, who fell to the Dodgers in the World Series.

I have known Don for years and have worked closely with him in New York. I know that his knowledge of the game and his character make him a great addition to our tremendous technical staff.

At 64 years old, Mattingly had a successful playing career, excelling as a first baseman for 14 seasons with the Yankees (1982-95). He was a six-time American League All-Star and Most Valuable Player in 1985. As a manager, he led the Dodgers (2011-15) and the Marlins (2016-22), being recognized as the National League Manager of the Year in 2020 after leading the Marlins to their first playoff appearance since 2003. Mattingly replaces Mike Calitri, who is now the Phillies’ field coordinator. The Phillies, who won the National League East Division for the second consecutive season, were eliminated by the Dodgers in the National League Division Series.
