Known as “Scrap Iron” for his dedication and commitment on the field, Garner had a 16-year playing career, excelling on teams such as the Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants.

Garner was a key player in the Pirates’ championship in the 1979 World Series, demonstrating his value both with the bat and the glove. In that season, his OPS was .800 and he batted .417 in the National League Championship Series. In the World Series, his average was .500, contributing to the Pirates’ comeback. He was selected for the All-Star with Oakland in 1976 and with Pittsburgh in 1980 and 1981. His versatility allowed him to play in more than 700 games at both second base and third base.
