Andrew Painter Overcomes Migraine and Shines on the Mound

The young Phillies right-handed pitcher, Andrew Painter, showed his mettle by recovering from a migraine and pitching five solid innings of relief. Painter, who was originally scheduled to open the game, was affected by a migraine that caused him discomfort during the morning. Despite this, he entered the game in the third inning, relieving Zach Pop. Pop was the emergency opener, allowing a run in the first two innings of the 4-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Painter’s performance was notable. He retired the first nine batters he faced before Ildemaro Vargas hit a double and scored thanks to a sacrifice fly by Nolan Arenado in the sixth inning. Painter finished his performance after seven innings, allowing only one run on three hits, striking out seven batters and issuing one walk. His earned run average (ERA) decreased from 4.82 to 3.77 thanks to this outstanding performance.

I felt pressure in my head and was vomiting all morning.

Painter was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 amateur draft by the Phillies. He suffered an elbow injury during spring training in 2023 and underwent Tommy John surgery that same year. His Major League debut was on April 1, where he allowed one run and five hits in 5⅓ innings against Washington, with eight strikeouts and one walk.
